Some foods have a direct impact on our vision. To safeguard our eye health, maintain an excellent view, and protect our eyes from diseases that could reach them, we should adopt a diet rich in components that have a direct impact on our vision.
Carotenoids: Carotenoids are natural plant pigments that cause the vibrant colors of vegetables and fruits we enjoy everyday. Lutein and zeaxanthin, among others, seem to protect the eyes against degeneration and disease. Lutein is found in foods such as spinach, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli, fresh peas, and many fruits and yellow or orange vegetables. Zeaxanthin is found in red peppers, corn and some leafy green vegetables, such as kale, spinach and turnip greens.
Zinc: This is a mineral found in almost all cells of the body. Zinc enhances the health of the organism, especially the eyes. You can find zinc in many foods, including red meat, poultry, oysters, chicken, cooked green beans, yoghurt, milk, cereals and nuts.
Vitamin C: This water-soluble vitamin is present in most tissues in the body and plays an essential role in your eyes. As a super antioxidant, it prevents damage caused by free radicals and protects cells, thus preventing certain eye diseases. The papayas, orange and grapefruit juice, strawberries, raw green peppers, tomatoes and cauliflower are engorged with this precious resource.
Vitamin E: Like vitamin C, this is a powerful antioxidant. It protects the eye against eye diseases such as cataracts and macular degeneration (AMD). Almonds, corn oil, mangoes, hazelnuts, turnip greens, pistachio nuts and peanuts are all rich in vitamin E.
